With Boonboomger nearing the end of its run, Toei are gearing up for
the release of their 50th anniversary Sentai series, No. 1
Sentai Gozyuger. Here is all that has been revealed about the
upcoming show thus far.
No. 1 Sentai
Gozyuger will be releasing on the 16th of February, the
week following Boonboomger’s final episode on the 9th.
The show will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the
Sentai franchise and mix both animal and dinosaur motifs, two of the
largest successful motifs for the franchise.
The plot of the
series will focus on the team attempting to collect Sentai Rings
across the world as they battle “Number One Monsters” who take on
the form of Sentai heroes. The team will also be competing amongst
themselves for the rings to determine the best Super Sentai hero.
The
show will be run by Akiko Inoue, best known for her work as a
secondary writer of Kamen Rider Gotchard and directed by Ryuta Tazaki. Ryuta Tazaki has a long history with tokusatsu media, having directed episodes of Kamen Rider and Super Sentai since 1995. His latest work was on the final episode of the previously mentioned Kamen Rider Gotchard.
Character bios for
the Gozyuger members have also been released online, with descriptions sourced from The Toku Source and Tokunation:
Gozyu Wolf (Red): An
antisocial but kind character with the ability to track others
through his sense of smell.
Gozyu Leon (Blue):
Charismatic hero with super hearing abilities.
Gozyu Unicorn
(Black): A psychic hero with a focus on family dynamics.
Gozyu Tyranno
(Yellow): The most innocent of the team with super strength.
Gozyu Eagle (Green):
Described as a playboy, Eagle is revealed to have super speed
abilities.
Gozyu Unicorn and
Tyranno will be breaking firsts this season with Unicorn being the
first black sentai to be a woman and Tyranno will be the first T-Rex
themed hero to not be red. The team will all have multipurpose
TegaSword weapons that will transform into components of this teams
giant mech.
A small teaser for the series released as part of the announcement for Gozuger. The video counted down the previous Sentai teams from 50 to 1, with the reveal of Gozyu Wolf stood of a stage triumphantly as No. 1. While Gozyuger will be the 49th Sentai show, it will feature the 50th sentai team due to Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger containing two rival sentai teams.
No. 1 Sentai Gozuger will air on TV-Asahi on the 16th of February.
