Shin Godzilla to get Special Black and White Cut for Japanese Theatres

Shin Godzilla will be making a return to the big screen with a special black and white edition from director Hideaki Anno himself.

With Godzilla day and the release of Godzilla Minus One fast approaching, Toho have revealed that they will be having special screenings for an exclusive black and white version of the 2016 hit Shin Godzilla.

Takashi Yamazaki, The director of the upcoming Godzilla Minus One has been helming a project to rerelease certain Godzilla films to Japanese cinema. Four Godzilla films were selected by the director to make their return, with the first showing happening last September. The latest news has revealed that Shin Godzilla will be the fourth and final movie to come out, but this time with a special cut made specifically for the event.

The title of the project is called Shin Godzilla: Ortho and as far as we are aware, is only going to be altered in terms of colour grading to perfect a classic look for the beast. Releasing across six theatres as a live event on October 27th, the showing will start with an interview with Hideaki Anno before a screening of the movie. For those that miss the showing, it will be playing again on the 28th and 29th of October.

While this is fantastic news for fans in Japan, it’s yet to be known if western markets will ever get access to the release. With it being so early since announcement, it will likely be a while before we hear any news of either a cinema showing or a special Blu-Ray release for the project.

Godzilla Minus One hits western markets on December 1st

Takashi Yamazaki has been running the event since September, with the next Godzilla film returning to cinema being Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidora. The director claimed the film is his “favourite Godzilla” and the director of the movie, Shusuke Kaneko will be appearing to discuss the project.

The film was the last Japanese release to feature King Ghidora but fans of the three headed beast will be happy to hear that the same 2001 design was used recently in an advert for Marubeni. The Kaiju was seen fighting alongside samurai and zombies to stop the end of the world, with Marubeni even repairing an original suit from the production for advert.

Shin Godzilla released in 2016 as the first in Hideaki Anno’s Shin series of film. The project was later followed up by Shin Ultraman and Shin Kamen Rider. All three projects were a reimagining of the origins for each of the famous franchise titles, with Shin Godzilla being such a hit that Toho placed a statue of the new design outside of their offices following the success.

Godzilla Minus One will be releasing on Godzilla day, November 3rd in Japan and December 1st in America, there is currently no confirmation of a UK release date for the movie.
